The League of American Bicyclists announced today the latest Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) designations, and for the first time awarded Boulder with a "platinum" designation.

Boulder awarded “platinum” level Bicycle Friendly Community award The League of American Bicyclists announced today the latest Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) designations, and for the first time awarded Boulder with a “platinum” designation. The platinum designation is the highest honor a community can receive; only two other cities in the country have received the platinum award.

Applicant communities were judged in five categories including engineering, education, encouragement, enforcement, and evaluation and planning. Communities with more significant achievements in all of these areas receive superior awards.

“The League of American Bicyclists is the leader for bicyclist education and advocacy in the country,” said Boulder Mayor Shaun McGrath. “To be recognized by such a progressive organization with its highest honor, only highlights the strides Boulder has made in creating exceptional bicycle programs, facilities and community values. To all the people who ride bikes in Boulder, including kids riding to school, world-class racers training for their next event, commuters riding to work, the mountain bikers riding Marshall Mesa, and the families biking to the Farmer’s Market, I say, thank you for riding and for your long-term support for making Boulder a good place to ride a bike.”

McGrath said the designation will only fuel Boulder’s inspiration to pedal the path of a model bicyclist-friendly community. “The league has recognized us as one of the very best in the nation. But I am aware, as are most cyclists in Boulder, that we still have work to do to make bicycling safer and more attractive to more people. This award will inspire the city, and hopefully our community, to continue our progress.”

In 2004, Boulder was awarded the gold designation. Up for renewal this year, the city’s continued efforts earned it the top notch platinum designation until 2011. Long-standing collaboration between city departments, and strong partnerships with other agencies, organizations, businesses and individuals throughout the community, made this designation possible.

In early 2007, Boulder City Council set goals for bicycling including achieving a platinum rating and hosting a Bike Summit. The summit, held in fall 2007, was attended by nearly 100 leaders from the bicycling community and staff from local agencies who gathered to brainstorm a vision that would make Boulder the bicycling capital of the world in 20 years.

“We are so honored to receive the platinum designation for bicycle friendly communities,” said Interim City Manager Stephanie Grainger. “We have worked extremely hard on making Boulder a place that residents and visitors alike can easily get around by bike. Receiving this award is solid confirmation that our efforts have been recognized and that our community truly depends on our bike facilities for their daily commutes.”

In Boulder the fine for cycling at night without a light is $50. We hope this campaign will get lights on more bikes and create a safer community for cyclists, pedestrians and drivers.”

Back here in sunny warm Boulder we have 2 rides on the track for tonight and of course the Saturday ride with our friends at Bicycle Village.

Margarita ride is on with Steve leading and meeting at Serrano’s at 5:15 with a departure time of no later then 5:30. This is a mountain/ hybrid ride around the Gunbarrel area.

Road Bike ride meeting at Amante’s at 5:15 and leaving no later then 5:30. Either a jaunt up to Jamestown or a spin in the flats doing a Hygiene oriented loop. App. 20 to 25 miles. Donald will lead.

Remember our daylight is shorter so we need to leave early to insure getting back at a reasonable / safe time.

Sat ride at Bicycle Village meets at 9:15 am and leaves at 9:30. Route varies weekly app. 25 to mile miles with a rest break in between for coffee or ice cream.

We got the final results in for the Tour de Cure Charity ride from Todd. Great work to Todd and everyone involved in the BCC /Tour de Cure Team in raising money for the American Diabetes Association

We projected 1500 riders and $500,000 in fund raising.

We had over 1900 riders and raised over $640,000!

Last year we were the #4 Tour in the nation.
Now, we are #3!

Our Team raised a total of $6,474.99
(which smartass donated $.99?)

That is pretty impressive for a first year team.

Our top 3 Team fund raisers are:

and
Lisa Case and Susan Gingrich - $700 each

Finally, a reminder that we will be setting up a table at the upcoming Veloswap in October and can use volunteers to help work the booth for an hour or two throughout the day. Email me below if you are interested.

How about this weather!!!!!! These cloudless September days afford some of the best riding weather of the year, except for the occasional cloud drenching rain like last Thursday. As a rule we as a club do not ride in lightning or rain. The shortening day light is shrinking our window of opportunity on the weekday rides.

Please note earlier starting times for Tuesday and Thursday rides - meet at 5:15 leave no later then 5:30. The Saturday ride still meets at 9:15 am at Bicycle Village. We want to thank our friends at Bicycle Village again for sponsoring the Saturday morning ride. I’m personally heading out the the Pacific NW tomorrow so we have Sandy leading the Thursday night Road Bike ride leaving from Amante’s. Patrick will lead the Tuesday Road Bike ride.

Thanks to all who have volunteered to lead rides this year— we couldn’t have done it with out you . No Mtn/hybrid Margarita ride this Thursday because of the Buff’s game! Go Buff’s!!! Thursday night Margarita ride will return on the 25th.

Coming up in October we hope to have a booth at the Veloswap. We are looking for volunteers to help with the booth. If your thinking about going and want to help out with the booth for an hour or two that would be great! We also need help with set up and teardown.

New website is getting close - thanks Eli and Marcus for working on that!

This trail ride, meets at Boulder Brewery at 5:30 leaving at 5:40 PM. Average speed 10 to 15 miles per hour. This week we’ll head east onto the Boulder Creek Bike and then turn south going out to Marshall Road staying on various bike paths, (note some dirt and small gravel paths).

We’ll head back north along Marshall to the Table Mesa area then wind our way back through CU campus back on to the Boulder Creek Bike Trail and back to the Brewery. Enjoy your favorite beverage and food after the ride on the outdoor patio, Approximate riding time 1 1/2 hours.
Ride leader Donald.

Tuesday Social Road Bike Ride
Road Bike Ride at the Boulder Brewery. Join us for the BCC 5:30 PM Tuesday social road bike ride at the Boulder Brewery. This is an intermediate road bike ride at a 15-18mph pace. The pace is fast enough for exercise, but shouldn’t make you keel over! The objective is a good work out and to build camaraderie. Approximate distance is 25-30 miles. We’ll return to the Boulder Brewery by 8:00 PM.

Thursday Margarita Ride
Hybrid/Mtn Ride with Mexican Margs Trail riding suitable for hybrid and mountain bikes. Meet at Serrano’s at 5:30 and leave at 5:40 PM. Average speed 10 to 15 mph. Head out too the “Res” and return to Steve’s special swimming hole. Meet at Amantes North at 5:30 PM. Join ride leaders Marie and Patrick on a hill climb to Jamestown. We’ll head up 36, turn on Lefthand Canyon road, and take the classic route to Jamestown. It’s probably the easiest mountain climb in the Boulder area and is suitable for all road bike riders especially intermediate road bike riders or folks new to road biking. Pace will be 15mph to 18mph on the flats and quite a bit slower on the climb. The BCC has a “no drop policy” meaning we will wait up for you so long as you are willing to complete the ride.
